About Us

Mission Statement:

Out Against Abuse is a non-profit organization focused on providing interactive online resources to bring together activists, volunteers, survivors and members of the South Asian community to encourage the discussion and understanding of gender related abuse.  We work to create constant dialogue and collaboration so we can all learn from each other and work to educate our community on how to end gender related violence in our homes and community.

Objectives:

  1. Serve as an online hotline for domestic violence victims
  2. Allow survivors to anonymously find up to date resources and services
  3. Initiate and encourage discussion of gender based abuse in the South Asian community through various educational programs
  4. Spotlight activists to educate readers and provide guidance on key domestic violence issues
  5. Organize communication between volunteers, activists, and scholars of domestic violence

Founder and Executive Director: Sabrin Chowdhury

Sabrin serves as the Executive Director of Out Against Abuse, and hopes to create a place for active discussion on issues dealing with gender based abuse. Her interests include working to advance women's rights, and she is also active in other domestic violence non profit organizations, including Gen2, Sakhi's Young Professionals Committee. Sabrin graduated from the University of Texas-Austin, majoring in Business Honors and Finance with a minor in Economics.

Board Member: Anindita Chaterjee Bhaumik

Anindita brings 16 years of experience as an advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. As a domestic violence consultant and educator, she has authored numerous articles on violence against women and has conducted several workshops in different languages. Anindita has served as Associate Director of Policy & Communications for the Domestic Violence Project of the Urban Justice Center, a South Asian Outreach Director for Sanctuary For Families, and is also an ex- member of the New York State Attorney General's Crime Victims Advisory Board and is the clergy liaison for NYPD.

Board Treasurer: Hussain Karimbhoy

Hussain currently oversees budgeting at Out Against Abuse. A graduate in Economics from the University of Toronto and currently employed by a hedge fund, Hussain provides strategic guidance with respect to the financial needs of the organization. Hussain is passionate, yet pragmatic, and has lent support in the past to tutoring programs for refugees as well as at risk youth.
